The Hand, central episode of the film "Eros" is written and directed by Wong Kar-Wai. Inspired by the difficulty of having physical contact between people during the SARS epidemic in 2003, the director approaches the theme of eroticism starting with one of the senses, touch.
The hand of the title subject is that of high-class prostitute of the fascinating interpreted Gong Li, who began the sexual pleasure of a young and skillful tailor who sews for her, with his own hands, the beautiful clothes, a symbol of the feelings of 'unexpressed love for the proof that the young woman. Review: Eros
In the program out of competition at the 61st Venice Film Festival, "Eros" consists of three episodes signed by Wong Kar Wai, Steven Soderbergh and Michelangelo Antonioni.
Theme of the three chapters is eroticism. Very strongly wanted by the Italian film that Soderbergh has found an enthusiastic supporter and director of Hong Kong unconditionally.
The first episode - directed by Kar Wai - titled "The Hand" is about Xiao Zhang (Chang Chen), a tailor's apprentice who becomes the favorite of the top edge of a comely prostitute (Gong Li). Withered woman's beauty, only the Chang will remain faithful and close to the tragic end.
The second episode - signed by Steven Soderbergh - is called "Equilibrium." It is the story of an advertising (Robert Downey, J.) haunted by a recurring dream in which he sees a woman who knows but I can not remember the identity once awake. During his first session of analysis, the analyst (Alan Arkin), in turn, is distracted by a woman who sees through the window of the study.
The third moment is directed by Antonioni. Entitled "The dangerous edge of things", tells of a couple in crisis (Christopher Buchholz and Regina Nemni) on vacation. He meets a young woman (Luisa Ranieri) who burns with a passionate relationship. In the end, mysteriously, the two women meet on a beach.
Of the three episodes, the most accomplished is to Kar Wai. The director of "Happy Together" and "In the Mood for Love", thanks to a thrilling good as Gong Li, packs a small gem that is fascinating for its elegance and refinement. The story of a tailor passionate and loyal to his owner moved. More bizarre - but funny - the short film that Soderbergh uses alternating black and white and color to emphasize the difference between the moments of real and dreamlike. The finish is the best time of the episode.
Finally, the episode of Michelangelo Antonioni - that this film will also be a tribute. The theme of inability to communicate, always present in his works, emerges powerfully, and some shots are from an anthology. But the bad acting of the actors and the weakness of the story demean this test.
To join the three episodes, there are drawings of Lorenzo's dream Mattotti and a beautiful song by Caetano Veloso on "Michelangelo Antonioni", not to be missed (and on the whole, the best thing the movie ...).
